The Magic of the 80/20 Rule.
If there is ever a time that I feel the need to purge, get organize and refresh, it’s in the New Year. And this year, I continue to find myself reading articles about simplifying and pairing back and how that can free up our minds to really focus on the things we need and give us head space to explore new pathways to our happiest self. One such advice I found was the application of the 80/20 rule. I knew about the 80/20 rule: 20% of the people do 80% of the work, 80% of business sales come from 20% of customers, 80% of the land is owned by 20% of the population and so on and so forth, but I never thought how applicable it was to our homes. The idea is that 20% of what we have in our homes, get 80% used. So that means, I’ve got a whole lotta ‘stuff’ that is in essence kinda useless and just takes up space. The challenge is weeding out what we really don’t need; like that random (and not so attractive) corner table stuffed with junk we’ve been meaning to go through for years: the bins in the laundry room filled with stuff you haven’t used in years; hundreds of unused kitchen gadgets; closets full of… don’t even get me started! Now that doesn’t mean because something isn’t necessarily functional that it isn’t actually useful. Take a “painting” for example, it isn’t necessarily useful, but if it brings you joy, then it is certainly passes the test for being useful (to your happiness). The goal is to clear your space of stuff. It clutters your head. Purge. Organize. And make sure you surround yourself with luxuries that bring you daily joy. Obviously, there are the necessities, but beyond that, everything else should evoke your style and priorities. Home should be your sanctuary, your own personal heaven. Simplify and elevate. Update with fresh textures, colors, and plants.
A new pillow or blanket for family snuggling. A family portrait wall. A fresh new entry rug that says, renewed for the new year!
I think we will all discover, with less ‘stuff’ and intentionally curated homes, we will find the time to do the things we’ve always wanted to do actively, creatively and socially. Like going for that indulgent Sunday afternoon picnic that you’ve never been able to make time for…
