Last year, my niece turned six.
If you have ever shopped for a six-year-old, you probably know how impossible it feels. Kids today seem to have everything. Their toy shelves are already overflowing. Another stuffed animal? Forgotten in a week. Another game? Exciting for a few days before something new takes its place.
I wanted to give her something different.
Just a gift that would remind her she was loved every time she saw it.
While searching for ideas, I came across monogrammed blankets. At first, I wasn't convinced. Would a little girl really get excited about a blanket?
Then I thought about how much she loved cozy movie nights, reading bedtime stories, and building pillow forts in the living room. Suddenly, it made perfect sense.
I decided to order a custom XO Blanket with her first name stitched neatly into one corner. I chose soft pastel shades with tiny stars because she had recently announced that her bedroom was going to become a "princess castle."
When the blanket arrived, I couldn't stop smiling. It was incredibly soft, and the personalization gave it such a thoughtful touch. It didn't feel like just another blanket. It felt like it had been made especially for her.
The moment she unfolded it, she spotted her name.
"That's mine!" she shouted with the biggest smile on her face.
She wrapped it around herself like a cape and spent the next hour running around the house pretending to be a magical princess. Every few minutes she would stop, look at her name again, and smile as if she couldn't believe it belonged to her.
When it was time for birthday cake, the blanket stayed on her shoulders. When everyone gathered for family photos, she insisted on holding it. Even after all the presents had been opened, it was still the one thing she refused to put down.
That made me realize something.
Children love gifts that feel personal. Seeing their own name on something instantly makes it special. It tells them that someone chose that gift just for them.
Over the next few months, I kept noticing the blanket everywhere.
It was on the couch during movie nights. It came along for long car rides. It traveled to Grandma's house for sleepovers. It even became part of her reading corner, where she liked to curl up with her favorite storybooks before bed.
One afternoon, I asked her why she always carried the same blanket. She looked at me and said, "Because it's MY blanket."
She simply loved that it belonged to her.
As adults, we often think children only care about toys that light up, make noise, or come with dozens of accessories. But sometimes the gifts they treasure most are the ones that make them feel seen.
The XO Blanket became more than something warm to cuddle under. It became part of her daily routine and one of her favorite comforts after busy days at school or long afternoons of playing outside.
Looking back, I don't think she'll remember every toy she opened on her birthday.
But I know she'll remember that personalized monogram blanket with her name on it.
